December 8 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Diaspora Arts Connection proudly presents Mahsa Vahdat and Adrienne Shamszad: An open discourse on learning traditional Persian singing with live performance. Join award-winning musician and master teacher Mahsa Vahdat and her apprentice, professional artist and singer-songwriter, Adrienne Shamszad as they showcase the work they did together for a year as Master and Apprentice in traditional Persian vocal music. At the beginning of 2018, Mahsa and Adrienne won the Master-Apprenticeship grant through the Alliance for California Traditional Arts. This is your chance to be a part of their unique collaboration. This will be an intimate gathering where the audience will be invited to ask questions throughout the evening. About the artists:

Mahsa Vahdat is a prominent performer of Persian vocal music and strong advocate of freedom of expression in music. Her career has given a deeper knowledge about Iranian poetry and music to large audiences in Europe, America, Asia, Oceania and Africa.

Mahsa has developed her personal style based on the Persian vocal tradition of classical and regional folk music, but with a contemporary expression. She has always searched for ways to make her music relevant to the present world. Even if the origin of her styles is Iranian, she believes in her music’s ability to express a universal message of humanism and freedom. Her collaboration with musicians from Iran and many other parts of the world has contributed to the development of her personal expression.

Adrienne Mehri Shamszad is a singer-songwriter known for her special blend of folk, soul, blues and Eastern influenced improvisational vocals. Her lyrics are poetic, intimate, genuine and inspired by the mystic Poets of Iran as much as the folk poet-songwriters of the 60s and 70s. Her strong and soulful voice, skillful and complex guitar work and bold performance style have made her a popular performer for well over a decade.

Since beginning formal training in Persian music in 2016, Adrienne’s music has expanded to a genre of it’s own. She sings the blues, love songs, revolutionary anthems, lullabies and prayerful power ballads in English and in Farsi. She mixes her own lyrics with those of the essential Persian poets such as Hafez, Rumi and Saadi and brings the messages of her ancestors into the present moment. Through working with Mahsa, Adrienne has developed a well-rounded vocal repertoire of original and traditional pieces.
