Yalda: Celebrating the Arrival of Winter

Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies, San Francisco State University in collaboration with Diaspora Arts Connection proudly present an evening of poetry and song with Zara Houshmand and Mahsa Vahdat to celebrate the Winter Solstice. Free and open to the public.

About the Artists

Zara Houshmand is an Iranian American writer whose work bridges cultural divides and includes poetry, theatre, new media arts, memoir, and literary translation. Her poetry is widely published in journals and in various anthologies. She has edited various books and her collaborative writing includes A Mirror Garden (2007) with Monir Shahroudi Farmanfarmaian, and Running Toward Mystery (2020) with the Venerable Tenzin Priyadarshi. Zara's translation of Rumi Poetry, Moon and Sun, was published in 2020.

Mahsa Vahdat is a prominent performer of Persian vocal music and strong advocate of freedom of expression in music, a dedicated singer and musician in her musical path and artistic cause . Her career has given a deeper knowledge about Iranian poetry and music to large audiences in Europe, America, Asia, Oceania and Africa.
